The only change I make is sprinkling corn meal over the loaves before they go into the oven.

Beef Barley Soup in the Crockpot

Whenever I can use my crock pot I'm a happy man. Here's a great recipe from the Chunky Chef for beef barley soup in the slow cooker. I didn't remember changing anything from the original recipe. I used a chuck steak as the beef. I seasoned it on a rack and let it sit a bit. Then I cut out most of the fat. I seared the beef on the stove-top and did something different with the fat pieces. I figured that if I wrapped the fat and trimmed meat in muslin and threw it into the crock pot that we'd have more flavor. And the soup was extremely favorable. The downside was that there was too much fat in the stock, so I removed the fat with my trusty fat separator .

Mulligatawny Soup

Oh my God, one of the few things I made recently that I loved. FULL of flavor! When I first tasted it it was weak and flavorless, primarily because I bumped up the ingredient quantities and didn't have the spices to match. Ingredient Changes: 1 onion (not 1/2) 4 stalks celery 3/4 cup white wine, cooked down with the vegetables 3 Tbsp minced FRESH garlic 1-1/2 GRATED carrots 1 gala apple, skin removed and diced 1 Tbsp brown sugar 2-3 Tbsp dark brown soy sauce 8 drops fish sauce 1-2 tsp paprika and salt chicken spice 2 large packages (8 oz total) chicken stock 4 tsp mild curry 2 dashes ground red pepper MSG! Probably about 1/2 tsp. Really kicked up the flavor. Cooking Notes: Did not add cream at the end. Added cream the first time I made this. It didn't need it. Next Time: I added a full cup of rice. Seedling Status Feb 25, 2020

Something is tugging at me that I'm launching seeding operations too early this year, my second year of farming from seed. But I don't want to miss anything! Don't want to fall behind. I figure I can re-pot between now and June as needed, which is something I enjoy doing anyway. One issue I know I will have to confront like I did last year was: Where do I put all of the plants before they go into the ground??? Seedling Status for February 25, 2020 is that I went ahead and planted my tomatoes. I have eight varieties. One plant each was not enough for the season. Four each (or 32 total) was too many, so I settled for 24 tomato plants this year. Three of each. Sounds like a lot, but it really isn't. I plan on seeding more tomatoes in April as I anticipate moving into Community Garden Plots in July that are not tended like I did last year with much success.
